Driveways take more abuse than any other hardscape surface on a property, so the base requirements are considerably higher than a patio. Deeper excavation, more base material, and thorough compaction are what keep pavers from rutting and shifting under vehicle weight.

Edge restraint is what holds the whole field together. Without it, the outermost pavers migrate outward under load, gaps open up, and the entire surface loosens from the perimeter inward. It's an inexpensive component that determines whether the driveway stays tight.

The other advantage over poured surfaces is repairability. There's no patching a paver driveway, because you're working with the same material that's already there. Lift the affected section, correct what's underneath, and reset it.
